General features
- Most common cause of thrombocytopenia in HIV-infected patients
- Either direct HIV infection of hematopoietic stem cells or immune process
Clinical presentations
- HIV test may be considered in patient with unexplained thrombocytopenia
- May have splenomegaly
Key pathogenesis
- Probably ineffective platelet production and increased peripheral platelet destruction
