General features
  • Most common cause of thrombocytopenia in HIV-infected patients
  • Either direct HIV infection of hematopoietic stem cells or immune process
Clinical presentations
  • HIV test may be considered in patient with unexplained thrombocytopenia
  • May have splenomegaly
Key pathogenesis
  • Probably ineffective platelet production and increased peripheral platelet destruction

  • Thrombocytopenia
  • Other findings associated with HIV infection
