  • Reduced splenic function
  • Various etiologies
Clinical features
  • Increased risk for infection, especially encapsulated bacteria, such as pneumococcus
Etiology
  • Splenectomy
  • Infarction, such as seen in sickle cell disease
  • Others including congenital abnormality, celiac disease, etc
