General features
- Undifferentiated malignant epithelial tumor composed of large, atypical cells
- Associated with smoking
- More common in men, age 50 and up
- Diagnosis of exclusion only on resected tumor
Key morphological features
- Mass, usually peripheral location
- Frequently involves thoracic walls
- Usually solid nests
- Markedly atypical and anaplastic cells
Markers
- Positive: Cytokeratin
- May be negative for squamous and
adenocarcinoma markers, as well as neuroendocrine markers, including p63, TTF1, chromogranin, CD56, etc
Treatment
- Surgery
- Radiation
- Chemotherapy
