General features
- Chronic mucosal inflammatory process, may lead to mucosal atrophy and metaplasia
- Incidence increases with age; in Europe/Japan, affects 50% at age 60+
- Histology does NOT correlate well with symptoms
- May have intestinal metaplasia
Etiology
- Autoimmune
- Chronic Helicobacter pylori infection
- Toxins (alcohol, tobacco)
- Reflux of bilious duodenal secretions
- Obstruction (bezoars, atony)
- Radiation
