General feature
- 20 - 30% of ovarian tumors
- Usually children and young adults
- May have mixed components
- Serum markers important for diagnosis and follow up
Clinical features
- Sudden onset abdominal pain, abdominal enlargement
Markers
- hCG: Choriocarinoma and tumors containing syncytiotrophoblasts
- AFP: Yolk sac tumor
- Elevated both hCG and AFP: Embryonal carcinoma, polyembryoma
Classification
- Mature cystic teratoma (dermoid cyst)
- Immature teratoma
- Monodermal teratoma (struma ovarii, carcinoid,etc)
- Dysgerminoma
- Yolk sac tumor (endodermal sinus tumor)
- Embryonal carcinoma
- Polyembryoma
- Ovarian choriocarcinoma
- Mixed malignant germ cell tumor
Treatment
- Surgery
- Chemotherapy
