Anatomy/histology
- Germinal epithelium, tunica albuginea, cortex, medulla
- Three components
Germinal epithelium: Specialized
mesothelium, derived from peritoneum
Germ cells: Follicles
Stroma: Granulosa cells, theca cells,
fibroblast, hilar cells
Follicular development
- Regulated by pituitary FSH and LH
- Primordial follicle (primary oocytes, arrested in prophase I)
- Primary follicle (primary oocytes)
- Secondary follicle (primary oocytes)
- Graafian follicle (secondary oocytes, arrested in metaphase II)
- Ovulation
- Corpus luteum
- Corpus albicans
Hormone production
- Granulosa cells: estrogen before ovulation, progesterone after ovulation (corpus luteum)
- Hilar cells: Androgen, similar to Leydig cells in testicle
Non-neoplastic epithelial/stromal lesions
Sex cord-stromal neoplasm
