Anatomy/histology
  • Germinal epithelium, tunica albuginea, cortex, medulla
  • Three components
Germinal epithelium: Specialized mesothelium, derived from peritoneum
Germ cells: Follicles
Stroma: Granulosa cells, theca cells, fibroblast, hilar cells
Follicular development
  • Regulated by pituitary FSH and LH
  • Primordial follicle (primary oocytes, arrested in prophase I)
  • Primary follicle (primary oocytes)
  • Secondary follicle (primary oocytes)
  • Graafian follicle (secondary oocytes, arrested in metaphase II)
  • Ovulation
  • Corpus luteum
  • Corpus albicans
Hormone production
  • Granulosa cells: estrogen before ovulation, progesterone after ovulation (corpus luteum)
  • Hilar cells: Androgen, similar to Leydig cells in testicle
Non-neoplastic epithelial/stromal lesions
Sex cord-stromal neoplasm
