General features
- Heterogeneous group of disorders affecting the skin or mucous membranes
- Blister: Fluid filled cavity within or beneath the epidermis
- Vesicles: < 0.5 cm; bullae: > 0.5 cm
- Diagnosis requires clinical information
- Large intraepidermal bullae without acantholysis may represent healed subepidermal bullae
- Blisters can also be secondary to other conditions, such as burns, lupus erythematosus
Key features for diagnosis
- Level of plane of separation
Suprabasal
Subepidermal
- Presence or absence of acantholysis
- Characterization of inflammatory infiltrate
- Immunofluorescence pattern
Inflammatory blistering disorders
Non-inflammatory blistering disorders
