General features
  • Heterogeneous group of disorders affecting the skin or mucous membranes
  • Blister: Fluid filled cavity within or beneath the epidermis
  • Vesicles: < 0.5 cm; bullae: > 0.5 cm
  • Diagnosis requires clinical information
  • Large intraepidermal bullae without acantholysis may represent healed subepidermal bullae
  • Blisters can also be secondary to other conditions, such as burns, lupus erythematosus
Key features for diagnosis
  • Level of plane of separation
            Subcorneal
            Suprabasal
            Subepidermal
  • Presence or absence of acantholysis
  • Characterization of inflammatory infiltrate
  • Immunofluorescence pattern

Non-inflammatory blistering disorders
